Stock look with the best upgrades!
“Sara” is a 1960 Bugeye Sprite in a mostly stock configuration with a 948 engine and drum brakes all around. We sold Sara in 2011 to passionate parents in Virginia, who have generously upgraded the car through their time of ownership. In April of 2014, they hired us for an expensive upgrade… AN5L 23816 got a five speed ford gearbox conversion, new dashboard with all correct gauges and switches and a new leather dash covering (vinyl was the stock cover material). A newly rebuild zero-miles speedometer was installed at that time, which now shows just 543 miles.
We upgraded the ignition switch at that time with our guillotine to keep it secure, and we also installed LED lights all around for better visibility and brighter brake lights. We also changed the fuel sender gasket and pressure tested the tank to ensure there were no leaks, and installed K and N lifetime air filters and retractable three-point seat belts. Those owners won some impressive first place trophies with this wonderful car.
Recently, we were lucky to be able to buy this car again, which just 543 miles since we owned it last. The prior owners purchased the best upgrades so you won’t have to, and this makes Sara an incredible find… a fully sorted Bugeye with thousands of dollars of upgrades purchased by the prior owners.
This time through our shop, we have further improved the car by installing a rebuilt 1098 engine head (with an improved combustion chamber design over the 948 head, which thus provides more power), fit with hardened valve seats that are ready for unleaded fuel. We also replaced the front brake wheel cylinders. Now this car is truly a sensational Bugeye ready for its next chapter with a lucky new owner.
The five speed kit is a wonderful asset, as it provides an attractive overdrive fifth gear for cruising as well as a fully synchronized first gear for ease of use. The leather custom seat covers are stunning, with matching green piping. The seat belts, larger mirror and LED lights make the car more useable on modern roadways. The luggage rack makes weekend getaways that much more attractive. All the gauges work, and the fuel tank, which holds 7.2 gallons, is leak-free.
Other great upgrades already fit are a handsome wood steering wheel and matching wood shift knob, powder coated cockpit trim and windshield frame and new windshield rubber and glass. Durable rubber floor mats are also installed. We even put a cigarette lighter in the dash to power your cell phone or GPS charger. This is carefully fit in the washer pump hole on the dash, so that no additional holes are added (it’s completely reversible if you would prefer the stock washer pump assembly-which most people never use). The only thing I could find that wasn’t upgraded was the horn, which is a little wimpy. We can install a new air horn for the new owner if so desired. Additionally, the front bumper bar is not as nice as the rest of the car, and that too could be replaced for a new one. Many people remove the front bumper altogether, so we will leave that up to the new owner. We have new bumper bars in stock.
The tonneau coordinates nicely and a good (older) black top comes in a smart custom pouch-we have new tan tops if the new owner wants to add to the tan and green theme as shown with the tonneau!
The underside is quite clean. The passenger floor pan was replaced during the car’s restoration and the entire underside is solid with no issues. We’ve just added a series of photo that showcase this nicely restored metal work.
Sara is a solid and stunning car with excellent appointments. Please call if you would like to make this car your own!
