The perils of purchasing a “restored” Bugeye Sprite on EBAY.

About once per month I get a cry for help from someone who bought a “restored” EBAY Bugeye Sprite. Each time, a nice person calls me to say they bought a car that looked great but it just doesn’t work… can we help?

Each time I wonder why they didn’t buy a Bugeye (that works) from us!

One fellow (now a great customer) called to say that he planned to drive his new EBAY Bugeye up from Manhattan to have us fit a new top. I suggested that his transporter deliver the car to our shop (on it’s way to him in NYC from New England) for inspection before he takes delivery, and he insisted that the seller said the car was ready to drive anywhere, so he was confident to drive it up to our place.

He called a few days later to say it caught fire on his first drive. The car was towed to our shop, where we found a series of cracked and aged fuel lines that had poured fuel directly onto the hot exhaust. Fortunately, he got the fire out in time, but not before some paint was burned on the nose.

Another recent customer called to ask if I could modify the rear suspension of their new EBAY purchase to make it work properly… I suggested that it probably just needed to be made to work properly! Upon inspection of that car (which ended up in our shop to be made right), we found rear shocks installed with shouldered bolts that were too long, so the rear shocks were floating 1/4 inch off their mounts because they couldn’t be fully tightened, and the rear end was (not surprisingly) making quite a racket. That “perfectly restored” car also needed a long list of repairs, including a new gas tank, new sending unit, four new shock absorbers, new slave cylinder, carburetor tuning, and on and on. A lot of sorting was needed.

We are not perfect. And we are dealing with ancient British engineering which is also less then perfect at times. On the other hand, after 111 Bugeyes have passed through our building, we have a great feel for what works and what will probably leave you stuck on the side of the road (or worse) if it isn’t addressed promptly.

Not every EBAY car has issues. And we buy cars on ebay occasionally. But we also have a shop full of parts and people who can make the cars right. Unless you are looking for a project, I wouldn’t suggest buying a British car on EBAY. More often than not, the seller doesn’t know what they don’t know, so you end up bidding on a car that is going to need major service once you receive it.

We can’t fix everything on every car that goes through our door, and that’s how we can keep a wide range of choices for customers with varied budgets who are looking for a Bugeye Sprite. But we form an informed partnership with every one of our clients. We discuss the car’s strengths and weaknesses, and discuss the options so each person knows exactly what they are getting.

EBAY can be intoxicating, and the lure of a good price is always strong. You might pay a little more with us, but our customers buy our reputation, expertise and support, as well as our strong desire that you have a great experience with these delightful little cars.

We wish you a great new year, with a British car that gets you from A to B with no hassles… and a British car that always puts a big smile on your face!
